Winter is upon us and that usually means dogs with dry itchy skin, but jojoba oil can help.
Jojoba oil is a liquid wax produced inside the seeds of jojoba plants. Jojoba is a shrub that is native to Mexico and to the desert southwest. This oil is rare in that it is an extremely long straight chain wax ester and not a triglyceride, making jojoba and its derivative jojoba esters more similar to human sebum and whale oil that to traditional vegetables oils jojoba is interesting because it is odorless and has a viscosity which is temperature Independant. Applications vary from engine lubricating oil to cooking oil. Jojoba wax is used predominantly for pharmaceutical compounds, specially for skin products. After polynerization, factice can be used for rubber production. It's also used as biodiesel fuel and is becoming more important. Jojoba oil consists of long straight monoesters of 22 to 44 carbon atoms (as apprised to most vetetable oils which consists of triglycerides), which makes it comparable to diesel in terms of energy density. The pretreatment of jojoba oil for use of biofuel is simpler compared to that of other mineral and bio oils and it is expected that combustion of jojoba oil leads to smaller NO emissions compared to diesel and does not lead to any SO emissions.
In the 70s whale oil was banned in the United States so people turned to jojoba oil instead. Jojoba is actually superior to whale oil in many regards. Today people use it to moisturize skin and hair but it also has many benefits for dogs and skin issues.
Jojoba is great for moisturizing dogs skin. It is also a wonderful fungicide, killing off any fungal infections your dog might have on his skin without relying upon drugs that have unpleasant and sometimes dangerous side effects.
